The project financing for the solar plant with battery storage at Zablikani, the plastic recycling company in Tamale in northern Ghana, was successfully completed at the end of December 2024. This means that the project can now be implemented as planned.
We are currently in the process of sourcing the necessary components. The first parts have already been purchased and it is becoming apparent that all planned components will be available regionally. This is good for the schedule and also for the local economy.
Robert Baah Yawson is our man on site and is responsible for the operational realisation of the plant construction: high-quality JA Solar 565 watt modules are being installed, the inverters are from SUNSYNK, as is the high-voltage battery storage system.
With his many years of project management experience and his excellent network, Robert is firmly in control, so we firmly believe that construction and commissioning can be completed on schedule in the first quarter.
Before the start of construction, the final acceptance of the Zablikani hall roof will be carried out by a structural engineer. Here we are typically German and play it absolutely safe - safety first applies to the employees as well as to the plant. Assembly is expected to start at the beginning of February.
Zablikani saves USD 250,000 in electricity costs
Zablikani has concluded a solar-as-a-service contract with EWIA for the installation and utilisation of a 57 kWp solar roof system with a 61 kWh battery storage system.
This system combination will cover a good third of Zablikani's electricity consumption (34.5% according to the PV Sol simulation). This will enable Zablikani to continue producing even during grid interruptions without having to switch on environmentally harmful diesel generators.
This reduces Zablikani's electricity costs by around USD 900 per month (i.e. around USD 10,800 per year; more than USD 250,000 over the 25-year total term). This saving strengthens the company's economic situation and helps to counteract the flood of plastic waste: Around 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste are generated in the country every year - the annual growth rate is 5.4% (source: WEF). Only around 9.5 % of this is collected for recycling. A significant proportion of this waste is disposed of improperly, leading to environmental problems such as pollution and flooding.
