Our technical engineer, Kwadwo Asafo-Adjei, will represent EWIA at the Digital Power Sub-Saharan Africa Partner Capability Competition, hosted by Huawei, at the end of October. Kwadwo has since advanced to the semifinals as part of the national team and will therefore be traveling to South Africa.

The competition is a regional event focused on technical knowledge and skills, organized by Huawei Digital Power Sub-Saharan Africa to assess, recognize, and enhance the technical expertise of its sales partners, installers, and engineers.

The preliminary round—a theoretical entrance test (usually an online quiz) at the national level—which focused on basic technological knowledge, was followed by the national finals. The top talents from each country—in our case, Ghana—compete against one another in in-depth practical exams or simulator tests. Afterward, the national winners were grouped into national teams. And now the regional semifinals are underway, in which the winners from West Africa will face off against the winners from the other African regions. EWIA qualified as the runner-up behind another company from Ghana.

On October 29 and 30, Kwadwo will fly to South Africa to compete against the competition in a “Technical Track” at Huawei’s regional office in Woodmead, near Johannesburg. His team has 20 minutes to present their project, followed by a 10-minute Q&A session. What exactly will he present? It involves a systematic project settlement process that encompasses site inspection, simulation and sizing, procurement/logistics, commissioning, document review, and handover.

Determination Pays Off

Kwadwo graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and electronics. Kwadwo’s passion for solar energy began in January 2024, when he worked as a PV installer at a local trade and technology company under a one-month contract. During this time, he gained hands-on experience installing solar panels, which deepened his interest in the field of solar energy.

For this reason, Kwadwo also took a solar energy training course in May 2024, which gave him a comprehensive understanding of solar energy systems. That same year, he helped install a 1.26 MW solar power system on the roof of a mall in Accra.

Based on this, Kwadwo joined us as a technical intern to gain further experience in the development of PV solar projects, including system design, monitoring, and installation. His drive and dedication quickly led to his promotion to technical engineer.

Next up: the global finals?

We’re very proud of Kwadwo (which means “born on Monday”) and are rooting for him to reach the global finals with Team Ghana, which will be held at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China!
